LETTER WRITING

If you're writing a Christmas card to your child in Uganda, here are some things to remember:

  • Christmas is the most important holiday of the year. The first of December, people begin to purchase new clothes, gifts and Christmas cards, which are popular among urban dwellers. City authorities organize Christmas caroling and many Christian choirs participate with the lighting of giant public Christmas trees.
  • Many children participate and play character roles in Christmas plays. The plays are becoming very popular as children perform in front of their parents and the general public. The occasion is also used to distribute prearranged Christmas gifts to children and this alone makes the children look forward to this season. Shops stock many Christmas decorations and the streets are filled with Christmas music blaring from speakers stationed in street corners and shops. One is likely to hear Jim Reeves' music throughout the cities, heralding the coming of another Christmas.

If you're writing a birthday card to your child, here are some things to remember:

  • A child's birth date is often not recorded in African countries.

Information Regarding Names:

  • Many African people are routinely called by their surname instead of their first name.

Information Regarding Language Differences:

  • In some areas of Uganda people only have one word, "Papa," for both fathers and paternal uncles.

Write your child a letter.
