Fernando lives with his father and his mother. His duties at home include gathering firewood and running errands. There are 3 children in the family. His father is employed as a farmer and his mother maintains the home.

Soccer, bicycling and running are Fernando's favorite activities. In kindergarten his performance is average and he also regularly attends Bible class.

Please remember Fernando in your prayers. Your love and support will help him to receive the assistance he needs to grow and develop.
Fernando lives in the mountainous community of Yoloaiquin, home to approximately 3,600 residents. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, mud walls and tile roofs.

The regional diet consists of maize, beans, chicken, bread, plantains and rice. Common health problems in this area include stomach illnesses, respiratory infections and renal failure. Most adults are unemployed but some work as street vendors and earn the equivalent of $160 per month. This community needs computer lessons, employment opportunities and higher education.

Your sponsorship allows the staff of Cascadas de Salvación Student Center to provide Fernando with Bible teaching, medical checkups, vaccinations, sports, special celebrations, field trips, tutoring, math contests, vocational workshops, school supplies, handicrafts and literacy lessons. Seventy percent of the children in this project do not attend school because they are underage. The center staff will also provide meetings and vocational workshops for the parents or guardians of Fernando.
Most Salvadorans live in the country's subtropical central region of valleys and plateaus. A hot coastal plain is in the south and the north is mountainous. Nearly all the land is farmed; coffee is grown in the mountains.

Ninety percent of El Salvador's population is of mixed Indian and Spanish descent; about 60 percent live in urban areas. Although a few Indians have retained many of their old customs and traditions, most people have adopted the Spanish language and culture. Fifty-seven percent of Salvadorans are Catholic but there is extensive activity by Protestant groups and over twenty-one percent are Protestants. Compassion works in the central, southern and western regions of the country.

El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. Spain claimed the country in 1525. Almost 300 years later, El Salvador declared its independence and, after a brief union with Mexico, joined four other Central American countries to form a federation. When this union ended in 1838, El Salvador became a republic. The country experienced a period of increasing unrest during the 1970s that culminated in a civil war in the 1980s. In 1992, a peace agreement was reached.
