Why I Joined the Advocates Network

Step Out in Faith

Stephanie Burchett was terrified of joining Compassion's Advocates Network.

"I didn't want to join at all!" says Stephanie, a 37-year-old mother of three. "First, I kept thinking, 'What if I have a child's packet in my hand and no one sponsors him? What if I fail this child?'

"Second, I'm a very assertive person — you know the Tupperware-sales kind of personality? What if my approach was too strong?"

But God kept working in Stephanie's heart. "Finally, I went to a friend and explained my fears. My friend looked at me and said, 'You're afraid to fail a child, but by not answering God's call, you've already failed that child. And God knows your heart's desire — He will change your approach.'"

So Stephanie dove in. "I've been doing this for only a short time, but God is already blessing my socks off!" she says. "Being an Advocate is causing me to grow so much spiritually. I'm so on fire right now!"

For Stephanie, there's no experience like seeing a child sponsored. "When someone sponsors a child, I know how God will work in that person's life and the child's life. It's exciting to be a part of that."

If you have a heart for children in need, Stephanie encourages you to join — even if your spouse has other interests. "My husband has other ministries at our church," she explains. "You don't have to do this as a couple. He supports me, but this is my calling. So please don't let that hold you back.

"If you're thinking about joining the Advocates Network, I know you might be hesitant, but what's going to happen to children in need if you don't do it? Please step out in faith!"
