Sampaan Rak Child Survival Program (THCS7)

Sampaan Rak Child Survival Program (THAILAND)
Ban Maelab, Thailand

Mothers and babies in Thailand who live in extreme poverty need our help. Your support of this center can truly save lives!

Your gifts help provide pregnant mothers with prenatal care. In a community where many mothers cannot afford medical care, the Child Survival Program also ensures that each mother has access to a trained birth attendant or doctor during delivery of her baby. This alone saves countless lives!

Caregivers and babies receive nutritious food, milk, vitamins, hygiene supplies and medical checkups. Trained Christian staff members reach out to mothers and their children through regular home visits and counseling and help them access needed medical care.

Mothers enrolled in the program also grow spiritually and socially through Bible studies and prayer meetings. They are trained in child care and health, nutrition and hygiene. Many attend literacy classes and also learn income-generating skills such as cooking and embroidery. Your gifts to this center will transform lives!

This Child Survival Program, TH-CS7, is a ministry of Ban Maelab Church in cooperation with Compassion.

Thailand's central region is a rich agricultural area known as Asia's rice bowl. The northeast is poor, subject to seasonal droughts or floods, while the north has forested mountains and fertile valleys. Rain forests fill the south. Monsoons, high temperatures and humidity dominate Thailand's tropical climate. A major tsunami in December 2004 claimed 8,500 lives in Thailand causing massive destruction of property in the southern provinces.

Meet Orapan and Chanida

Orapan and Chanida were among the first mothers and children enrolled in the Sampaan Rak Child Survival Program when it opened in September 2009. Since then, Orapan says, “I have learned about the stages of child development, which helps me understand my children’s needs better.”

She also receives supplementary food, such as eggs and milk, and has learned how to prepare nutritionally balanced meals. As a result, she says, “My daughter is developing fast and is healthier.” In addition, because of the program activities, Chanida is developing confidence and good social skills.

Orapan also appreciates the program’s training in income-generation skills. She has learned how to weave and grow mushrooms, skills that she can use to earn money and help provide for her family.

“I hope I can raise my children well and that they will be healthy,” Orapan says.

When you support the Child Survival Program, your charity donation helps Compassion’s local partners reduce infant and child mortality by:

  • Preventing illness. Regular prenatal and postnatal checkups contribute greatly to healthy births. And regular doctor visits and immunizations keep infants and toddlers healthy and happy.
  • Giving children a healthy start. Nutritious food staples and supplements help children grow and stay strong.
  • Providing training. Mother and caregiver training means children receive mental and physical stimulation activities to improve and develop motor skills, social-emotional skills and cognitive development.
  • Empowering mothers and caregivers. Infant development and safety, nutrition, literacy and job training skills are just a few of the topics the Child Survival Program training includes.
  • Offering spiritual nurturing. Mothers establish relationships with Christian Survival Specialists through regular home visits. They also build relationships and a community of faith with other women through local group meetings.
  • Including family training. When possible, fathers and other family members living in the home are included in training to help build a stable, secure environment for the child.
