Rutooma Child Survival Program (Uganda)
Northwest of Mbarara , Uganda

In Uganda, northwest of Mbarara, babies are entering the world without a healthy and hopeful start to life.

Mothers in this community of Mbarara get pregnant at a young age. This is mostly due to a lack of education and opportunity. It creates a vicious cycle of poverty.

These young mothers are typically unable to deliver healthy babies because of their circumstances. Their babies, in return, will also be presented with a lack of education and opportunity.

The cycle will repeat.

This is where Compassion’s Child Survival Program (CSP) steps in. Located in the northwest of Mbarara, the Rutooma Child Survival Program is coming alongside mothers to help them deliver and raise a healthy baby.

Mothers in this CSP are taught:

  • how to take care of their babies, including encouraging development and the importance of playing with their baby
  • how to prevent illnesses and diseases
  • safe food preparation
  • how to keep a clean home

Mothers who attend this CSP receive nutritious food and vitamins, which are essential to the growth and development of their baby.

They also learn about Jesus and receive a Bible.

Before entering the Rutooma Child Survival Program (CSP), Jane and her husband struggled to feed their baby, Emily. They had little income and even less food.

They watched as their baby became sick from lack of nutritious food. Jane’s husband was also abusive and fighting was common. Life was bleak and Jane wondered what would become of Emily.

When she registered with the local CSP, Emily was given nutritious food and became healthy. Jane and her husband also learned about, and accepted, Jesus as their Lord and Savior. The fighting and abuse has ended. Jane and her husband arehopeful for the future of their baby girl, Emily.

  • Delivery kits for expecting mothers
  • Twice annual health screening for all registered babies
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention education
  • Monthly food supplements





When you support the Child Survival Program, your charity donation helps Compassion’s local partners reduce infant and child mortality by:


  • Preventing illness. Regular prenatal and postnatal checkups contribute greatly to healthy births. Regular doctor visits and immunizations keep infants and toddlers healthy and happy.
  • Giving children a healthy start. Nutritious food staples and supplements help children grow and stay strong.
  • Providing training. Mother and caregiver training means children receive mental and physical stimulation activities to improve and develop motor skills, social-emotional skills and cognitive development.
  • Empowering mothers and caregivers. Infant development and safety, nutrition, literacy and job training skills are just a few of the topics the Child Survival Program training includes.
  • Offering spiritual nurturing. Mothers establish relationships with Christian Survival Specialists through regular home visits. They also build relationships and a community of faith with other women through local group meetings.
  • Including family training. When possible, fathers and other family members living in the home are included in training to help build a stable, secure environment for the child.
