PAG Buoy Child Survival Program (KENYA)
Kandalo, Kenya

Babies in Kenya are often born malnourished and underdeveloped. Many do not live past their first week. But your gift can make all the difference!

Through this center, mothers and babies receive nutritious food such as beans, eggs, fruit and porridge. The center provides hygiene supplies, including soap and towels, as well as vitamins and first-aid supplies. Survival Specialists — trained Christian workers — reach out to caregivers and their children through monthly home visits and counseling, and help them access medical care.

Plus, each pregnant mother has access to a trained birthing attendant or doctor during delivery of her baby. This alone saves countless lives!

Mothers enrolled in the Child Survival Program grow spiritually and socially through Bible studies. They are trained in nutrition, breast-feeding and early childhood care. Many attend literacy classes and also learn income-generating skills such as soap making and baking. Training also covers how to start a business, bookkeeping and business management. Lives are saved — and also transformed!

This center, KE-C20, is a ministry of PAG Buoye Church in cooperation with Compassion.

In Kikuyu, children under age 5 make up 45 percent of the population. Women are vulnerable because of a lack of education and a 60 percent unemployment rate. They are also vulnerable because of the young age at which they become first-time mothers: 16 is the average age, and most are single mothers.

These mothers generally work at low-paying jobs because they dropped out of school to have their babies. One-third of them give birth at a medical facility that is a 45-minute walk from the community.

Households average six children. The national maternal mortality rate is 530 per 100,00, and the mortality rate for children under age 5 is 84 per 1,000.

Meet Everline and Hillary

Everline lost her first two babies, and it was difficult keeping her third baby alive. When she became pregnant a fourth time with Hillary, she worried about his survival. But one month after his birth, Everline joined the PAG Buoye Child Survival Program.

The program provides her with nutritious baby formula for Hillary. She is also learning how to protect him from such life-threatening diseases as malaria. And when he is sick, his treatment and medications are covered.

“The Child Survival Program is a blessing to me,” Everline says. “I have gained from the many workshops, income-generation skills training, spiritual guidance and provisions for my child.”

She adds, “I appreciate the way the workers accept us as we are.”

Everline hopes that Hillary will grow “to bring positive change to our family, and even the world.”

When you support the Child Survival Program, your charity donation helps Compassion’s local partners reduce infant and child mortality by:

  • Preventing illness. Regular prenatal and postnatal checkups contribute greatly to healthy births. And regular doctor visits and immunizations keep infants and toddlers healthy and happy.
  • Giving children a healthy start. Nutritious food staples and supplements help children grow and stay strong.
  • Providing training. Mother and caregiver training means children receive mental and physical stimulation activities to improve and develop motor skills, social-emotional skills and cognitive development.
  • Empowering mothers and caregivers. Infant development and safety, nutrition, literacy and job training skills are just a few of the topics the Child Survival Program training includes.
  • Offering spiritual nurturing. Mothers establish relationships with Christian Survival Specialists through regular home visits. They also build relationships and a community of faith with other women through local group meetings.
  • Including family training. When possible, fathers and other family members living in the home are included in training to help build a stable, secure environment for the child.
