PAG Buoye Child Survival Program (Kenya)
North of Kisumu City, Kenya

In the western part of Kenya there is a small village in the district of Kisumu called Lake Basin. Approximately 20,000 live in and around this village, of which more than a quarter are children under five.

Life is difficult in this poverty-stricken region. Women here become mothers for the first time at the average age of 18 and families have an average of five children. Thirty-five percent of the population is affected by HIV/AIDS and health problems like malaria, pneumonia, tuberculosis and waterborne diseases are common.

Farming is the most common occupation, but drug use, prostitution and illiteracy are rampant, as people struggle to cope with the reality of poverty.

It is here that the PAG Buoye Child Survival Program is working to change the reality of poverty. The CSP provides families with life-changing benefits like:

  • supplemental food including beans, eggs, fruits and porridge flour
  • health care and regular medical checkups
  • school supplies and toys for the children
  • basic household and hygiene supplies
  • a Bible and spiritual instruction
  • literacy and job skills training for mothers
  • counseling

When you choose to support the PAG Buoye CSP, you offer children a chance to survive and end the generational cycle of poverty. Mothers learn skills that will forever change life for them and their children. Most importantly, families have the opportunity to know the God who loves them deeply.

Lorna, at 69 years old, is raising her five grandchildren after losing nine family members. The youngest is an 18-month-old baby named Stacy, whose mother died of a stroke.

Lorna works in her garden and does occasional work for others, but struggles to support her grandchildren. While it is hard for Lorna raise such a young child, the support from the PAG Buoye CSP has made it possible.

The food, supplies and health care that Stacy receives at the CSP have been a tremendous encouragement to Lorna, as have the emotional support and encouragement she’s found there.

I now have the strength to face different problems in my life after listening to different challenges mothers go through. I realize I am not alone in the problems and I will be able to overcome.
