Mejillone, Bolivia

Babies and mothers in Bolivia often face malnutrition, disease and a lack of medical care. That is why your gifts are lifesaving.

Your gifts help provide pregnant mothers with prenatal care. And in a community where many mothers cannot afford medical care, the Child Survival Program ensures that each mother has access to a trained birth attendant or doctor during delivery of her baby. This alone saves countless lives!

Caregivers and babies also receive medical checkups, nutritious food, milk, vitamins and hygiene supplies such as soap and shampoo. Trained Christian staff members reach out to mothers and their children through regular home visits and counseling and help them access needed medical care.

Mothers enrolled in the program also grow spiritually and socially through Bible studies and prayer meetings. They are trained in child care and health, nutrition and hygiene. Many attend literacy classes and also learn income-generating skills such as baking, crafts and card making. Your gifts to this center will truly transform lives!

This Child Survival Program is located on the plains of Mejillones, a community about 10 miles outside the city of El Alto. Mejillones is home to about 7,500 residents. The primary ethnic group is Aymara, and the most commonly spoken language is Quechua. Typical homes have dirt floors, cement walls and tin roofs. The primary diet here is made up of maize, bread and rice, with some fish or beef.

About 35 percent of the adults in Mejillones are unemployed. Some work as street vendors and earn about $3 a day.

Only 22 percent of children complete elementary school here, and fewer finish secondary school. Although a university education is available, lack of family finances prevents most children from completing even the lower grades or attending school at all.

Common health problem are infantile diarrhea, malnutrition and respiratory infections. When these health issues are left untreated, they can lead to death. Your gifts to this center will help save lives and offer incredible hope!

Graciela has lived a difficult life. At age 29, she lives with her husband and five children in one room. At night, all seven of them share two beds.

For years, she was also forced to live with her husband’s excessive drinking. But since she started attending the Iglesia Evangélica de Dios Boliviana Mejillones Child Survival Program with her 2-year-old son, Freddy, things are getting better every day. “We’ve changed,” says Graciela. “Before, my husband drank a lot. Now, since I’ve been going to church, he doesn’t drink anymore. Since I’ve been going to church, I feel better.”

During tough times, she finds support from a Survival Specialist at her Child Survival Program center. “I like when she comes to visit me,” says Graciela. “She teaches me and prays for my family.”

The program has also provided Graciela and Freddy with vitamins, medical checkups and food.

But she is most excited about learning to knit blankets to sell so she can help provide for her children. She is also learning to read and write. Graciela finally feels like she can have dreams for herself — as well as for her five precious children.
