El Faro Child Survival Program (Ecuador)
South of Manta, Ecuador

Las Laguna is a remote community in southern Ecuador. Located far from any big city, it is overlooked by the Ecuadorian government and poverty and unemployment are rampant.

Animals roam free throughout Las Lagunas contributing to the lack of sanitation, and consequently malnutrition, infections and disease are common, especially among children.

Though the men in this community work in agriculture or make bricks, this provides very little income. Most women do not have any formal education and are unequipped to care for their children, lacking even a basic understanding of child survival and development.

The El Faro Child Survival Program (CSP) is a beacon of light amidst these dark realities. Mothers and children who attend this CSP are finding hope for a better future. As a part of the CSP they receive life-saving benefits like:

  • prenatal care and medical checkups
  • immunizations
  • food supplements and nutritional counseling
  • health care for both mother and newborn
  • literacy training
  • life-skills and vocational training

At El Faro CSP, mothers and their children are also invited to church and given the opportunity know God, and this often leads to the most significant life transformations. Once they understand how much God loves them and that He has a plan for their lives, they find purpose and know that life will be different.

When you support the Child Survival Program, your charity donation helps Compassion’s local partners reduce infant and child mortality by:

  • Preventing illness. Regular prenatal and postnatal checkups contribute greatly to healthy births. And regular doctor visits and immunizations keep infants and toddlers healthy and happy. 
  • Giving children a healthy start. Nutritious food staples and supplements help children grow and stay strong.
  • Providing training. Mother and caregiver training means children receive mental and physical stimulation activities to improve and develop motor skills, social-emotional skills and cognitive development.
  • Empowering mothers and caregivers. Infant development and safety, nutrition, literacy and job-training skills are just a few of the topics the Child Survival Program training includes.
  • Offering spiritual nurturing. Mothers establish relationships with Christian Survival Specialists through regular home visits. They also build relationships and a community of faith with other women through local group meetings.
  • Including family training. When possible, fathers and other family members living in the home are included in training to help build a stable, secure environment for the child.

Twenty-year-old Valeria lives with her husband and 10-month-old son Angelo at her in-law’s house. The family of six shares a three-room home made of brick with a zinc roof. Valeria’s husband works in a brick factory and makes around 25 dollars a month which goes to buy food and water. From birth, Angelo has suffered from a weak immune system and constantly has colds and fevers.

Valeria and Angelo have recently started attending the El Faro CSP. Although she’s still new, Valeria already sees the difference the CSP is making in her life. CSP workers teach Valeria about how to care for Angelo, how to have good hygiene and cook healthy, balanced meals.

Being a part of the El Faro CSP has allowed Valeria to dream again, which has rekindled her hope.

“I would love to go back to school in the near future. I dream of a better future for my child, to be able to give him a true home.”
