Bethesda Child Survival Program (Indonesia)
Southeast of Kotamobagu, Indonesia

The small Indonesian community of Bangunan Wuwuk is deeply steeped in tradition. Many of these long held beliefs, while culturally popular, have multiplied the devastating effect poverty is having on women and children in this community.

Most of the women in this region are uneducated and have little knowledge of how to raise their children in a healthy environment or prevent common issues like disease and malnutrition.

Unemployment and a lack of any income generating skills cause many women to struggle to provide basics like food and clean water.

There is also a lack of understanding about proper hygiene and reproductive health.

The Bethesda Child Survival Program is working to change the habitual destructive thinking in Bangunan Wuwuk by providing a source of education and understanding. Women are finding hope at the CSP which provides families with life-changing benefits like:

  • supplemental food including fruits, vegetables, milk and vitamins
  • health care and regular medical checkups
  • school supplies and toys for the children
  • toiletries like soap, shampoo, a toothbrush and baby powder

    a Bible and spiritual instruction

    literacy training for mothers

    income-generation skills

When you support the Bethesda CSP, you give women a chance to escape the cycle of poverty bound in cultural tradition. As women learn and understand truth, they give their children a chance to survive and grow up in a healthy environment.

Jein attends Bethesda CSP with her daughter Leonita, who is almost two. Jein’s husband works as a day laborer, sometimes making the equivalent of $7 a day, but some weeks he is unable to find work.

Jein and her daughter have been attending the CSP for a year and a half and during that time Jein has learned to knit, a skill she is proud of. She has also learned a lot about God and how He can help her raise her daughter.

In CSP we have learned about sharing God’s love and that as a mother I have to be a good model for my child by living in God’s way. I understand that in raising a child, good food is not enough to make them successful but knowing about God and obeying Him is the important thing which we have to teach our children.
