Two years after Haiti’s cataclysmic 7.0 temblor and the many delays and challenges that followed, Compassion’s partners in Haiti dedicate their first rebuilt child development center, with 29 more queued for construction.
The challenges of moving from relief efforts to interim solutions to reconstruction in quake-torn Haiti have been daunting — but rebuilt child development centers are now slated to rise six at a time. A commitment to safety has been pivotal to the reconstruction of the first facility, Simonette Child Development Center.
Each additional center will be built to international seismic standards and will be fully compliant with construction codes of the Haitian Department of Education. During construction, the Compassion Facilities Reconstruction Team learned that what might have been “routine” logistical challenges in the U.S. were far from routine in Haiti. But they found solutions, and these are the firstfruits of new construction.
