This Compassion sponsor tour will be very unique and carefully put together for you, our dedicated WJTL listeners! Together as a group, you will visit one of the regions within Ethiopia that continues to be most significantly impacted by the realities of poverty. Compassion’s work in Ethiopia recognizes a fierce history of famine, disease and civil conflict. However, Ethiopia has become a very safe, welcoming country through a deliberate focus to drive out violence and focus on growing the economy and viability of this beautiful country located in the horn of Africa. Along the way you’ll serve in ministry together to bless and encourage many beautiful children of this region as well as opportunity to minister to the volunteers and staff who minister to them in Jesus’ name through the ministry of Compassion. Every aspect of this tour has been carefully thought out and prepared to provide you and your family, if you choose to bring them, with a safe and rich cultural experience while allowing you the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and serve the Church with a strong mission mindset.
Have you wondered who greets the child you sponsor when he/she arrives at the Compassion child development center? What is his community like? Does your sponsorship really make a difference in her life? Well, you won’t have to wonder anymore! Join us on this sponsor tour to Ethiopia where these questions and many more will be answered. When you return from this adventure, you will certainly never look at this country or your partnership with Compassion the same way.
While you will certainly see some remarkable touristy sites, the heart of our trip will be to serve alongside the Church. On this trip we’ll be serving together on various service projects, ministering to the children and youth and along the way learning more about God’s heart for the poor. As great as these experiences will be, nothing can compare with the day we’ve set aside for you to focus entirely on building your relationship with the child you sponsor!

Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information tab before finalizing your decision.
Saturday, August 3rd: Travel to Ethiopia
We depart from Washington D.C. early in the morning for our first day together on the tour! We have an overnight, 14-hour direct flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Once we arrive (at 7:45 AM), we will meet our incredible country staff and check into our hotel. We’ll have some time to rest and then a time of orientation to prepare us for the week ahead.
Sunday, August 4th: The Heart of the Church
What better way to sense God’s heart for this country and the communities we’ll be serving than to join together with our brothers and sisters in Christ for Sunday worship at a Compassion Child Development Center. After church we’ll have informal time to interact with the Compassion-assisted children who attend this church. This afternoon we’ll plan to do a little sightseeing to understand our surroundings as well.
Monday & Tuesday, August 5th & 6th: Deepening our Experience
Over the course of the next two days we will be spending our time at center ET-970. Upon arrival our team will be treated to a welcome prepared by the children of this student center. This will be a great opportunity to learn how Compassion works in the lives of these children and their expression of the unique gifts and talents God has given them. After lunch our ministry team will divide into smaller teams to interact with the children though VBS-style activities (Drama, worship, games or arts and crafts), which we will plan in advance. For any sponsors who have a sponsored child who attend this center, you’ll get to meet them while we are visiting. When we return the next day to the same student center we’ll pick right up and continue relationships that have formed during the previous day. Today you’ll divide once again to experience “A Day in the Life of a Sponsored Child” with children at their homes and finish any remaining service projects from the day before! It’s such a gift to work side-by-side with the children, staff, and the Church!
Wednesday & Thursday, August 7th & 8th: Expanding Our Mission
For our final two center visit days we’ll journey to ET-575. Our first day here at the center will be about building relationships and enjoying home visits. Again, if you sponsor a child that attends ET-575 you will have the opportunity to meet them at the center while we visit! We’ll get to know the staff and children, minister through our Vacation Bible School ministry and have some unscheduled time to interact with the children and staff as well. The second day will be about service as we roll up our sleeves to work alongside church partner staff helping them paint, cleanup and possibly assist with some minor repairs needed at the child development center. Later, we’ll enjoy time with some of Compassion’s Leadership Development Students over dinner and details for the following day will be fully revealed!
Friday August 9th: Sponsor/Child Fun Day & Returning Home
Today is a day you’ll never forget. Whether you have met your child previously on this trip or not, you’ll have the opportunity to spend the whole day together at a fun amusement park. Here you’ll have the opportunity to connect, play and deepen your existing relationship with your child. Nothing communicates the importance of your child’s life to you than a visit in person and this day will mean the world to both of you! Revel in every minute together! After our wonderful day we will return to the hotel with hearts full and prepare to return to the airport to travel home. What an incredible week filled with life-long memories!
In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs. Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration. If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return. Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.
RESERVATIONS should be made well in advance and require a nonrefundable deposit of $250.00 per person. Final Payment of $3360.00 is due no later than 5/20/13.
