Early next year our Uganda sponsor tour will allow you to see those things first hand. Uganda is a beautiful country located on Lake Victoria and called the Pearl of Africa. It is diverse as you’ll see when we travel within Kampala and then outside to Fort Portal. Of course we know the highlight will be the fun-filled day with your special child. It’s a day complete with activities, love, photos, hugs, and then tears when you say good-bye. Uganda has all Compassion’s core programs such as the Child Survival Program, Child Development Program, Leadership Development Program and Complementary Interventions and we will experience them all. As we experience each one you are sure to expand the depth of your knowledge of and passion for Compassion’s unique approach to child development. These experiences and a deeper understanding of the strategic partnership we have with the local evangelical church will be more evident to us as we go along. These local pastors share their vision and the benefit our partnership is having on their ministry as well. Also we’ll hear from mothers about the difference it’s making in their lives. In addition, you’ll learn about our Complementary Interventions which cover many extra things including malaria intervention and HIV/AIDS initiative. Uganda has done an incredible job of attacking these diseases and making a significant difference and they are excited to share their successes and remaining challenges they face to better equip us in our advocacy on behalf of the beautiful children we will meet.
Prayerfully consider if this is the time for you to make the trip. Sponsor tours do change your life as you experience it for yourself. Hopefully you can join us late January and I look forward to meeting you in New York.
Registration: Our trips fill up quickly on a first-come basis, so it is important to register as soon as possible. Once we have received your registration along with a deposit of $380, we will confirm your place on the tour and you may then purchase your domestic air ticket. The final payment of $4015 is due no later than 10/17/2014.
Please register now to complete the registration form online.
Price: The cost of this tour is $4,395.00 per person for double occupancy.
Included in our tour price are round-trip airfare between New York JFK and Entebbe, Uganda, lodging, all meals, travel within Uganda, tips, your child's travel, guides and translators during the tour, admission fees, departure tax and administrative costs.
Costs not included in the tour price are domestic transportation to and from New York, passport, visa, and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.
Safety and Preparation: This tour will be a little more difficult because of long international flights, time change, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads, and long days. We will have a light work element in this tour.
Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.
Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information document before finalizing your decision.
Days 1-2: Time to Go
Sunday-Monday, January 25-26 We’ve reached JFK Airport in New York City in enough time for our late afternoon flight across the Atlantic. As we’re getting acquainted, we begin to realize that God has put this group together for a special reason. Our KLM flight takes off and we settle in for the night. Arriving Monday morning in Amsterdam, we enjoy a little time before boarding our next flight that takes us down to Uganda. Arriving in Entebbe late evening, we immediately travel to our hotel in Kampala.
Day 3: Time in Kampala
Tuesday, January 27 Driving into a slum in Kampala, we quickly see how desperate the situation is. But then we arrive at the church which operates the Child Survival program through their development center. These mothers and babies have been transformed as they are given a chance to be what God intends them to be. What an inspiration!
Days 4-8: Time in the Rural Area
Wednesday-Sunday, January 28-February 1 Buses loaded and out into the rural area. Scenery is changing and we’re getting a better feel for the country. Arriving in Fort Portal we are so anxious for all we have to learn. One of the student centers we visit will highlight how they use the Complementary Intervention funds. These special funds do so much to add to the existing programs – proactive things as well as disaster response. Center day is Saturday and all the children are there. As we learn about how development through sponsorship really works, we are thrilled at the partnership we share. Interacting with the children certainly burns up a lot of our energy! Before traveling back into the city, we experience some of God’s fascinating handiwork as we visit Queen Elizabeth National Park. The animals, boat ride, and just the vastness of the area are hard to describe. Photos will help some. Finally it’s time to travel back into the city again.
Days 9-11: Time to Finish Well
Monday-Wednesday, February 2-4 Sharing devotions with the Compassion country staff starts our office visit on just the right note. Briefing and tour give us a much greater picture of how the ministry works in this country. How can they do so much with so little? University students in Leadership Development, as well as graduates of the sponsorship program, show us what it looks like at the finish. Yes, they are being released from poverty through sponsorship and it’s all in Jesus name. No tour is complete without that one very special day – the day we spend with our sponsored child. It’s a full day and we make the most of it. Smiles and hugs abound and then the tears flow as we hug good-bye. We’ll never forget this day! We finish our time here with shopping for gifts and souvenirs before debriefing our time together. Now grab the suitcases and travel to the airport.
Day 12: Time to Return Home
Thursday, February 5 Our flight left Entebbe late last night so we arrive in Amsterdam this morning. With several hours here we can enjoy the museum, shop, or journal before taking our KLM flight back across the water. Arriving in New York City in the afternoon gives us time to catch connecting flights home. The first thing we notice is that we’re very different than when we left. Uganda has touched our lives and we are thankful for what God is doing.
In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs.
Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration. If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return. Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.
RESERVATIONS should be made well in advance and require a nonrefundable deposit of $380 per person. Final Payment of $4015 is due no later than 10/17/2014.
AIR TRANSPORTATION and FUEL SURCHARGES
Air transportation as included in the tour is based on economy-class transportation and is subject to all rules and regulations governing these fares. Fuel surcharges are added on a per-ticket basis at time of confirmation. In the event these surcharges are increasingly higher than budget estimates, we may require additional funds to cover these surcharges.
Airlines will frequently have flight changes that may interfere with your international connection from your domestic flight. Please understand that we are not responsible for any costs associated with airline changes as they are outside of our control. For this reason, we recommend allowing at least four hours between arrival time at the gateway city and the time the group flight departs the airport. We will communicate any pricing and itinerary changes immediately.
