Unlike many countries in Africa, Rwanda has been a unified state since pre-colonial times It is populated by the Banyarwanda people who share a single language and cultural heritage. You’ll be swept away in the dancing, arts, singing, color and vibrancy around you.
On this tour, you will journey to Lake Kivu, visible from multiple points in Nyungwe National Forest. It is one of the Great Lakes of Africa and the fifteenth largest in the world. It belongs to a string of freshwater lakes, which lie along Africa's Great Rift Valley. It dominates the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest lake and sits among the greenery and natural beauty of the surrounding National Forest.
Alongside an incredible cultural experience, you will gain a deeper understanding of Compassion’s work in this beautiful country. Rwanda’s broken past of genocide and poverty has resulted in a resilient and warm people who recognize the importance of healing and connectedness with their fellow man. You will join them in their homes, meet their children, and connect with the incredible country staff and volunteers who implement Compassion’s program through the local Church. Once we have received your registration along with a deposit of $380, we will confirm your place on the tour and you may then purchase your domestic air ticket. The final payment of $4095.00 is due no later than 1/28/15.

Price: The cost of this tour is $4475.00 per person for double occupancy.
Included in our tour price are round-trip airfare between Washington D.C. and Rwanda, lodging, all meals, travel within Rwanda, tips, your child's travel, guides and translators during the tour, admission fees, departure tax and administrative costs.
Costs not included in the tour price are transportation to and from Washington D.C., passport and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.
Safety and Preparation: This tour will be more difficult because of long flights, time changes, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads and long days.
Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.

Days 1-2 Arriving in Kigali & Compassion Overview
We depart Washington D.C. for our adventure in Rwanda. We will have an overnight flight on Ethiopian Airlines Flight #501 to Kigali . Upon arrival we’ll have time for some rest. The staff have prepared an orientation for our group to prepare us for the week ahead. Day 2 we will visit the Country Office to meet the incredible staff who carry out the program for the beautiful children of Rwanda. In the afternoon, we will travel to Lake Kivu outside of Kigali.
Days 3-5: Understanding your Partnership with Compassion
We will journey out on day trips to see the student centers surrounding this area. You will have the opportunity to ask your questions concerning letter writing, financial stewardship, and how Compassion implements our sponsorship program in country. Home visits, cultural presentations and time with pastors round out your understanding of how we fit Compassion’s program to the unique aspects of poverty in this area to develop children to the best of their ability. We will also visit the Genocide Museum when we arrive back to Kigali.
Day 6: Meeting Your Sponsored Child
Today we have set aside time for you and your sponsored child to meet and be together! We’ll enjoy a fun day at a venue designed for both the young and the young at heart! This experience will connect you to the heart of your child and their family in a way you cannot even imagine. With family members, translators and child in hand, you’ll make memories for a lifetime!
Day 7: Experiencing Child Survival and Leadership Development
Today is all about understanding the important programs that compliment sponsorship. Meeting the young mothers and babies supported through the Child Survival Program will give you a clear picture of how crucial it is to intervene when these young ones are at their most vulnerable. Our evening will be spent with current Leadership Development students attending University in Kigali. They are the bright hope of Rwanda’s future.
Day 8: Returning Home
Our time to say good-bye has come. In the morning we return to the airport to fly home on Ethiopian Airlines flight #806 leaving at 10:30 AM. We arrive back to Washington D.C. at 8:30AM on May 17th. What an incredible time we’ve shared together with our new international family! Welcome home!
In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs. If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return. Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.

AIR TRANSPORTATION and FUEL SURCHARGES
Air transportation as included in the tour is based on economy-class transportation and is subject to all rules and regulations governing these fares. Fuel surcharges are added on a per-ticket basis at time of confirmation. In the event these surcharges are increasingly higher than budget estimates, we may require additional funds to cover these surcharges. We will communicate any pricing changes immediately.

Fifty percent of the tour cost will be required for cancellations 59-31 days prior to the sponsor tour.
One hundred percent of the tour cost will be required for cancellations 30-0 days prior to the sponsor tour.

RESPONSIBILITY: COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL makes arrangements with airlines, hotels and other independent parties to provide you with the travel services you purchase. These parties are independent suppliers over whom we have no direct control. In the absence of negligence on our part, we are not responsible for any claims, losses, damages, costs or expenses arising out of injury, accident or death; damage, loss or delay of baggage or other property; or delay, inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, upset, disappointment, distress or frustration, whether physical or mental, resulting from (1) the act or omission of any party other than COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL or its employees; (2) mechanical breakdown, government actions, weather or other factors beyond our control; (3) failure to obtain documents, passports, visas and health certificates valid through the date of reentry, when required, in which case a cancellation charge will be assessed; (4) failure to follow instructions including but not limited to check-in and checkout times and baggage handling; (5) cancellation or change for any reason in the travel services offered; and (6) medical or health problems or physical disabilities. COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL reserves the right to cancel or alter the travel services at its discretion, except as otherwise noted herein. In the event of change, COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL will try to substitute comparable services; in the event of complete cancellation by COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL, we shall refund all monies paid to us. COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL will not be responsible for any other cost incurred by participants.
