Dominican Republic Sponsor Tour

January 2009

The Dominican Republic is a country captured by its music, food and arts. To join Compassion on a Sponsor Tour is to walk through the streets of Santo Domingo and partake in the everyday rustics of life. On our tour through Santo Domingo, we saw a beautiful sunset on the ocean almost every evening. We had the great privilege of meeting some of the most dedicated, hard working Compassion tutors and center workers ever! While visiting one of the Compassion centers, during their teatime, we were served a special treat, which cannot be missed; fresh coconut milk drank straight from the coconut! The highlight of our week was the day we spent with our own sponsored child at a private park, reserved just for us, complete with swings, a pool with a waterfall, and a hammock for that afternoon siesta! Although it’s so difficult to say good-bye, we were all encouraged and motivated by our experiences to go home sharing the stories and “speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Proverbs 31:8

Check out some fun photos from our tour! If a picture can say a thousand words, could you imagine what you and your child’s story could be?!

Kenya Sponsor Tour

March 2009

Kenya is a spectacularly beautiful land of contrasts ranging from balmy beaches to the snow-capped peaks of MT. Kenya to the wild and vast deserts of the north. With the incredible variety of wildlife, it's definitely a safari capital. But beyond that there's Compassion with a full spectrum of its programs operating here. During our last sponsor tour, we experienced firsthand how each of those are implemented, visited our country office, shared in a service project, and, best of all, spend a fun day with our sponsored children. My favorite highlight of our journey took us to the Rift Valley in safari vehicles to experience the unique and intriguing Maasai culture. Of course, no Kenya trip is complete without a short safari! In the Maasai Mara we enjoyed watching elephants, zebra, hippos and even lions with cubs! We ended our tour relaxed and changed forever by the country and people of Kenya.

Ecuador Sponsor Tour

September 2009

Nowhere else on Earth will you find so much natural diversity — and all the fun that accompanies it — in so tiny a place. Ecuador is the second-smallest country in South America, but its range of offerings is no less than astounding. As we toured Ecuador, we had the opportunity to spend time in Quito and Guayaquil. We learned about the day-to-day workings of a Child Survival Program where the mothers demonstrated their crafts and trades they had learned. In Guayaquil we spent time learning of the hardships of the families that live on the river and experienced their day-to-day struggles of their community. On the flip side, we had a beautiful dinner overlooking the city one night in Quito, as well as a sightseeing tour of the old city area. The best day of all we spent with our sponsored children at a park where we played ball, swam in the pool and experienced the petting zoo. Check out the photos of our trip!

Colombia Sponsor Tour

May 2009

Our journey began with a fun orientation to help us get to know each other and prepare ourselves for a week of life shaping events. We traveled throughout Cartagena, Colombia, learning more about the day-to-day lives of our sponsored children and the hardships they face. We enjoyed playing with the children, participating in their festive performances, and indulged in authentic cuisine (the coconut rice was fantastic!). During our time in Cartagena we traveled with some of the best Compassion Colombia Staff, and saw much of the city as well as the urban areas. I cannot fully describe in words the intensity of emotions that we experienced when visiting our sponsored children and spending the day at an exotic tropical island park! At the end of the week we had time to see the sights and experience shopping in an authentic open-air market. Here we found all kinds of handcrafts, textiles, native gems and other unique items. The romantic and beautiful city will never be forgotten!
