Philippines Sponsor Tour April 2015

The rewards are great as you see Compassion's ministry in action. The smiles and hugs of the children instantly take away the winter blahs. The mothers and caregivers in the Child Survival Program warm your heart as you see the difference being made in their lives as they learn literacy skills, income-generating activities, and the best way to care for their babies and toddlers.

I know after reading all those letters and updates you are anxious to personally meet and interact with your child. What an amazing experience that will be! But there is so much more for you during those days in the Philippines. All 3 of Compassion’s core programs operate there; so you will get a broad understanding of this ministry you partner with. Seeing moms and babies in the Child Survival Program, then interacting with children in the development centers, and culminating with the university students in leadership development, gives you that thorough overview. You’ll also learn more about Complementary Intervention Funds as you see one of the ways they’re used. Another great part of our sponsor tours is the way you get to know the staff as well as pastors at several of our implementing church partners and centers. They have a heart and vision for the children and their families, working daily in spite of difficult situations. On this trip, we will create a vacation bible school program to share with the children. So you will be able to work with the Filipino tutors to share God’s love with the children in many different communities. It will be a beautiful life-shaping event that is likely to leave you forever changed for the good.

As you reread this invitation, please pray about the part God wants you to plan on the ministry team. It will change your sponsorship experience and enhance your view of His global church. You’ll come home eager to share your stories and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. But don’t wait too long. Spots are limited on this team, and they are likely to fill up fast. See you there!

Registration: Our trips fill up quickly on a first-come basis, so it is important to register immediately. Costs not included in the tour price are transportation to and from Los Angeles, passport and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.

Safety and Preparation: This tour will be more difficult because of long flights, major time change, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads, and long days.

Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.

Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information tab before finalizing your decision.

Days 1 and 2: Ready to Go
Sunday and Monday, April 19-20: We’ve all made our connecting flights to Los Angeles International Airport and are ready to go. Very early Saturday morning, our Cathay Pacific Airways flight takes off over the Pacific. Arriving in Hong Kong Sunday morning, we have time for a snack or to relax at the gate with our new friends. Then it’s time for the short flight to Manila. Arriving about noon, we make our way to the hotel. Before dinner we have a welcome and orientation.

Days 3 - 6: First Impressions and More
Tuesday - Thursday, April 21-23: As we visit our church partners and student centers, we learn about Compassion’s core ministries. We start with the Child Survival Program. Those babies and toddlers are the cutest, but it’s their mothers who impress us. Their testimony of the changes the dedicated staff is making in their lives is amazing. Their babies are getting the right start in life. Next our Child Development Center shows us how closely each individual child is monitored and encouraged. The steps involved in accomplishing their goals are impressive. When nearby families open their homes and welcome us in, we get a much better idea of daily life here. Then we conclude with our university students learning discipleship through the Leadership Development Program. Lastly a center at one of the churches gives us an example of applying Complementary Intervention Funds in a proactive supporting way. Yes, this all works, and children are being released from poverty in Jesus’ name. We will also have many opportunities to share a vacation bible school program, created as a team prior to our trip.

Day 7 and 8: Our Special Day
Friday and Saturday, April 24 & 25: On this trip, we will have two sponsor fun days, based on where the majority of the children live. When we meet our sponsored children, we make them kings and queens for a day. How can we even describe our feelings as we share the day together? Maybe we’re just sitting and coloring or chatting to get to know each other better. No matter what we do, it’s unbelievable. After lunch together, we share our gifts and pray as family units. Although we all have individual photos, we still want a group photo of our big Filipino family. Then it’s time to hug good-bye. Words cannot describe our unbelievable day.

Days 9-10: Sunday Worship and More Ministry
Sunday - Wednesday, April 26-29: You will always remember the times spent worshiping the Lord with our Philippino brothers and sisters in Christ. We will also have a chance to visit the Contact center. It is entirely staffed with former Compassion children and Leadership Development Program graduates; they provide accurate, high quality service to sponsors who call to ask questions about the ministry of Compassion. Before we turn our hearts home, we will spend one more day at a Compassion Child Development Center doing vacation bible school.

Day 11: Going Home
Tuesday, April 29: This morning finds us boarding our bus for the last time for our drive to the airport. Our Cathay Pacific flight takes us to Hong Kong. There we have time to shop for any additional souvenirs or snacks before boarding the long flight across the Pacific. Arriving in Los Angeles early in the afternoon, we say our last good-byes and continue home. We are definitely changed and ready to advocate for children. We are so thankful to be a part of God’s plan.
