Most children aren’t shy about showing love. A child who loves has no sense of personal space. He gives rough hugs and sloppy kisses. Climbs into your lap uninvited, grabs your face in his hands and looks in your eyes. A child’s affection knows no limits.

Children love deeply, daringly and without abandon. But then, the world begins to interfere. A child who is hurt by someone she loves learns to fear. A child who is neglected learns to hoard love. And a child who experiences hate can soon forget what it means to be loved.

I have watched all of these scenarios unfold among children in need. There are few things more devastating than seeing a child’s heart battered and bruised by severe poverty. But in the midst of that sadness, I also have seen great hope. A child’s heart is resilient. Even the most fearful, neglected child can learn to open up her heartand a child who has learned to hate can most certainly learn to love again.

Children in Compassion’s programs are loved — deeply, daringly and without abandon! They are loved by their sponsors, who speak words of hope and encouragement through letters. They are loved by workers at the student centers, who look after their physical needs as well as their emotional and spiritual ones. They are loved by their families — moms and dads who are learning tangible, practical ways to show their love.

Most importantly, each Compassion-assisted child learns about the love of God. They learn that they were created by the One who is Love itself, and that God loves them so much He gave His only Son for them.

This month, I encourage you to pray for the hearts of the children we serve. Pray that they will be open and receptive to the love that is lavished upon them — and that they will always be able to love as only a child can.

Verse of the Month

“Love one another deeply, from the heart.”
