Kenya is an amazing country that you hear so much about with tourism, safaris, and diverse cultures. However when you travel with Compassion you are definitely with the people and getting a taste of their daily lives. Plus you'll see first-hand what God is doing through your partnership with Compassion and exactly how far your sponsorship dollars go. We've done many sponsor tours to Kenya over the years, but this time we will stay in the Rift Valley for several days at Nakuru. Can you imagine meeting destitute mothers who who share with us how they are taught literacy skills, how to care for their babies and toddlers, God's word, and how to be good wives? That's our Child Survival Program and we'll learn all about this incredible aspect of Compassion's ministry. Complementary Interventions are additional funds that enable various projects that support and enhance Compassion's core programs. We're curious to see what those are in this area.
Then, get ready for all those hundreds of children on activity day in the Child Development Center. What a full day! Of course we must see the finish and what better way than to hear testimonies from the university students in our Leadership Development Program. We leave knowing that they are being released from poverty and it's in Jesus name.
Don't check out yet, or you'll miss out on the ultimate day – time with our sponsored children. Oh my the emotions and memories of the dream come true! But God didn't just give us wonderful people to spend time with; He also gave us a fascinating world filled with beauty and we're right there by one of those special areas. So of course we'll spend a day visiting Lake Nakuru National Park. This is one of Kenya's most visited parks so cameras are charged and we're ready. Hopefully our safari ride for animal viewing will include the white rhino which inhabits one area of the park. Then there's the lake ringed with thousands of pink flamingos. Yes, we've had an African tourist experience.
So often we think we're going to Africa to give and to teach them but inevitably they give us and teach us so much more. We definitely return home changed people. So won't you read the following itinerary, prayerfully consider joining our 2013 Kenya sponsor tour, and then register before it's too late? You'll be so glad you did!

1 and 2: New York to Nairobi
Wednesday and Thursday, January 23-24: After getting acquainted at the departure gate in New York's JFK International Airport we're ready to board our British Airways early evening flight to London Heathrow Airport. Changing planes still gives us enough time for English tea, book to read, or journaling what we want to learn on this tour. Arriving Nairobi late evening we quickly make our way to the hotel.
Days 3 and 4: Activities with Children
Friday and Saturday, January 25-26: Staff and pastor are outside to greet us as we arrive for our first child development center visit. Exploring the facilities at the center we make our way to the office where they proudly show their meticulous records. Not just financial and planning but also individual files on every registered child. It's impressive and reassuring because they do know their children. Saturday is activity day and we're kept busy with a couple hundred children. We'll participate in the classrooms to understand each of the 4 areas involved in their development. Both days ladies have prepared delicious lunches for us.
Days 5-7: Time in Nakuru
Sunday-Tuesday, January 27-29: Worshiping with our Kenyan brothers and sisters at an implementing church partner gives us a taste of Heaven. After lunch our cameras are ready as we settle into the buses for our trip down into the Rift Valley to Nakuru. After checking into our new hotel and having dinner we'll hear more about what to expect in this part of Kenya. One of the days we'll hear testimonies from those mothers whose lives are being changed through the Child Survival Program as we love on those babies. Our curiosity about Complementary Interventions is satisfied as we see the actual benefits.
Day 8: Lake Nakuru
Wednesday, January 30: After early breakfast we're off for our game drive in Nakuru National Park. Hopefully we'll see white rhino along with the warthogs, baboons, giraffe, lions, birds, and other species God created. Of course we'll have plenty of flamingos and other birds around the lake. Our day is full but we must travel back to the capital city and our original hotel.
Days 9 and 10: Our Children and Compassion Wrap-up
Thursday and Friday, January 31-February 1: Waking early this morning we're filled with such excitement as we prepare for the main reason we came. It's our day with our children! How long we've waited for this and how long our children have prayed for this. Now it's time to hug, laugh, share, take photos, pray together, and cry as we say good-bye. A visit to the Compassion Kenya office allows us an opportunity to express directly how these days have changed our lives. Encouragement as they work so hard daily. Hearing from some of our Leadership Development students confirm that our efforts are worthwhile. Lives are being changed – for eternity.
Day 11: Returning to our Homes
Saturday, February 2: After British Airways departed from Nairobi late last night we arrive back in Heathrow early this morning. Finding the departure terminal for over-the-water flight we again can relax, have coffee, or get a souvenir. Landing back in JFK and American soil early this afternoon we make our connections home. All the while trying to make sense out of everything we've just seen, hugged, smelled, and experienced. What an opportunity we've had to encourage others while we're being changed ourselves. We had so much more than just a visit to Kenya. Now we need to tell our story.
In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs.
Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration. If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return. Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.
