Located just north of the equator, Ghana is very close to the geographical center of the world. Formerly known as the Gold Coast, Ghana is now viewed as one of Africa’s most stable democracies. In the 1400’s the Portuguese built a castle to protect the rich source of gold here on the Cape Coast. Since it was right on the Atlantic Ocean, it was also a prime location for slave trade. Later, there was Swedish involvement in the country before it was finally colonized by the British.

At present, The Republic of Ghana is home to more than 20 million people. Among these people, God has planted numerous evangelical churches who are laboring together to bring Ghanaians to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Compassion partners with 141 of these churches to provide holistic child development opportunities for children, who will grow up to transform this country for the Kingdom of God. This is the context into which the Lord is inviting you to bring your unique gifts as we serve, encourage, inspire and bless the children of Ghana and those who love and minister to them.

As if that is not enough, the icing on the cake is the opportunity you’ll have to sit face-to-face with your sponsored child to encourage and bless him/her as well! It will be a fun and memorable day as you play and interact, as you visit and learn more about each other, and as you pray together. Smiles and hugs abound, as you create memories that will never fade.

Don’t delay – start praying now about your participation on this exciting ministry team. We have limited slots available and last summer they filled up very quickly, so you must act promptly to save your spot. We hope to see you soon!

Price: The cost of this tour is $4295.00 per person for double occupancy.

Included in our tour price are round-trip airfare between New York, JFK and Accra, Ghana, lodging, all meals, travel within Ghana, tips, your child's travel, guides and translators during the tour, admission fees, departure tax and administrative costs.

Costs not included in the tour price are transportation to and from New York, passport and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.

Safety and Preparation: This tour will be a little more difficult because of long international flights, time change, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads, and long days. We will have a light work element in this tour.

Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.

Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information tab before finalizing your decision.

Days 1-2: Welcome to Ghana

Saturday and Sunday, August 10-11: After introductions in New York’s JFK Airport, we’re off on our evening Delta flight across the Atlantic. When we arrive on Sunday at noon in Ghana, we immediately check into our hotel to rest and refresh for a bit. We will then spend some time getting oriented to this amazing country while preparing for our ministry activities throughout the week.

Days 3-5: Investing ourselves in the Ministry of Compassion Ghana

Monday through Thursday, August 12-15: We begin with a tour of the Compassion Ghana office, where musical praise and devotions together lay a beautiful foundation on which to build the rest of our tour. Over the next couple of days we’ll work together to encourage and equip the heroes of Compassion’s ministry: the tutors who serve the children! We will lead a creative brainstorming workshop designed to share ideas and spark creativity and imagination to propel them in their daily ministry. Along the way, we’ll learn about Compassion’s holistic approach to child development. We’ll also have time to test the newly created lessons as we present them to some of the children we’ll meet. A definite highlight will be the opportunity to meet families who have children sponsored through Compassion’s ministry, as we visit their homes.

Day 6: The Really BIG Day!

Friday, August 16: Today we meet our sponsored children! Our Ghana staff has planned a wonderful day for you and your child to spend together. Whether you’re talking, playing, laughing, or just sitting quietly together, it’ll be a time you’ll never forget. You can plan on lots of photos and hugs.

Day 7: Working Together

Saturday, August 17: Today we have an adventure as we spend the day at a student center filled with excited children and dedicated staff. After observing their normal routine, we’re off with our arts, crafts, and sports equipment. This is our chance to share with them as we teach, play, and serve them lunch. Thrilled but tired, we will head to the hotel afterwards for dinner and reflection.

Day 8: Worshipping Together

Sunday, August 18: With full hearts and a deeper connection to the people of Ghana, we’ll join one of our implementing church partners for Sunday worship. As we sing praises to our Lord and read scripture together, our hearts will be open and ready for the pastor to share his message. After lunch we will learn even more about the country our sponsored children call home, as we spend time at a museum. We will try to absorb all we can before sharing our impressions with each other on our way back to the hotel.

Days 9 and 10: Final Visit and Traveling Back Home

Monday and Tuesday, August 19 & 20: This morning we’ll have breakfast together and a final time to share thought, impressions and lessons learned these last few days. Today is a day to catch our breath, as we enjoy some sight-seeing and shopping before returning to the hotel to pack and rest before our journey home.
