This is such a great opportunity for you to travel to West Africa and spend time in your child’s country. You can visit evangelical churches who partner with Compassion as they operate a child development center. This gives you an opportunity to meet and hear the heart of the pastor and center directors as they eagerly share their vision. They are burdened for their communities and limited in resources to reach them. That’s where you and Compassion join in. You can hug those sweet babies and play with toddlers as the mothers and care-givers share testimonies about what God is doing. School children are eager to learn, and they are eager to play and interact with you. Teenagers are so proud to show you how far they’ve come during the 10-years Compassion has been in Ghana. Learning more about the history and culture of Ghana gives you a better understanding of your child and their environment. Of course the very peak of the whole trip is a special day with your child. Can you believe it? You are actually hugging and talking directly with that very special one. No long distance letters, but together in their homeland. God is amazing because He brought you together.
A basic itinerary is posted here, so please read and consider it. Then with prayer, make your decision about whether this is the right time for you to travel with us to Ghana for the memory of a lifetime. I would love to see you in the group!
Yes, we are aware of the Ebola virus in portions of West Africa. Right now we continue to monitor the situation as we stay in touch with our country staff and get updates from our risk group. There is health screening upon entry into Ghana but it shouldn’t pose any big problem. If flights are changed or we receive word that it is unsafe now to travel then we will make the necessary decisions. Please be assured that if we do have to cancel the tour completely we will refund your payment in full including the deposit. For now we are proceeding with our plans and praying for God’s intervention.
Registration: Our trips fill up quickly on a first-come basis, so it is important to register immediately. Once we have received your registration along with a deposit of $380.00, we will confirm your place on the tour and you may then purchase your domestic air ticket. The final payment of $3970.00 is due no later than 1/7/2015.
Please register now to complete the registration form online.
Price: The cost of this tour is $4,350.00 per person for double occupancy.
Included in our tour price are round-trip airfare between New York and Accra, Ghana, lodging, all meals, travel within Ghana, tips, your child's travel, guides and translators during the tour, admission fees, departure tax and administrative costs.
Costs not included in the tour price are transportation to and from New York, passport, visa, and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.
Safety and Preparation: This tour will be a little more difficult because of long international flights, time change, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads, and long days. We will have a light work element in this tour.
Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.
Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information tab before finalizing your decision.
Days 1-2: Travel
Friday-Saturday, April 17-18: Meeting at the departure gate in New York JFK Airport, we quickly feel the excitement and anticipation of our group. So much lies ahead, and God goes with us. Our Delta Airlines flight takes off in the evening, so we get to relax and sleep as we fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Arriving in Accra, Ghana, early Saturday afternoon gives us plenty of time to check in at our hotel and get settled before dinner and orientation for the week.
Days 3-7: Learn
Sunday-Thursday, April 19-23: Sharing in God's word at one of our partner churches sets the tone for our tour. Monday morning, as we spend time at the Compassion country office, we start to see what it takes to oversee Compassion's work here. We're convinced that these men and women are called to serve God, and they make an amazing difference this way. The following days we spend in Accra and the surrounding countryside learning about child development through sponsorship. So many details to handle, but we see everything is covered and in good hands. Beneficiaries of different ages are being reached and changed. Active toddlers in Child Survival, energetic grade-schoolers in our sponsorship program, and hard-working adolescents getting ready for university prove to us that with determination they will make it out of their present circumstances.
Day 8: Love
Friday, April 24: We are excited beyond words for this day. Boys and girls in their best outfits arrive for the day of all days. It's sponsored child fun day; a day to solidify those special relationships built through letters and Compassion updates. So many questions and so much fun that we don't want it to end. We can't wait to share our photos! We leave with hearts full of gratitude for the parents and caregivers who are willing to share their children with us. To God be the glory!
Day 9: Experience
Saturday, April 25: Today we join a development center during their full activity day. Yes, all 200 plus students will be there as we join in the different elements of child development. Now we begin to see everything it takes to release children from poverty in Jesus name. Thank you, Lord, for amazing men and women who serve You by teaching and working with children so they can become all You created them to be. We also learn something else today. We learn that one can never have too many smiles, hugs, and kisses.
Days 10-11: Return
Sunday-Monday, April 26-27: Praise and worship with our Ghanaian brothers and sisters is a perfect way to end our sponsor tour. What a spirit of unity! Shopping for some souvenirs and gifts and stopping at the grocery market for travel snacks completes our time. Now we get to fit everything into our luggage then head off to the airport. Delta Airlines takes us back across the Atlantic late Monday evening, and our hearts are overflowing. Arriving back into the USA early Monday morning, we can enjoy the day in New York or catch our connecting flight home. Excitement and thanksgiving outweighs our tiredness.
In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs. Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration. If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return. Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.
RESERVATIONS should be made well in advance and require a nonrefundable deposit of $380.00 per person. The final payment of $3970.00 is due no later than 1/7/2015.
