Ethiopia is such a fascinating country with warm and friendly people. You’ll be amazed at the welcome that awaits you. We plan to visit our country office to meet the staff and lay a foundation for understanding Compassion’s ministry there with the local churches. While traveling to Awassa we’ll enjoy the beautiful countryside and see the rural areas of Ethiopia. What a change from the city! Because the graduation festivities will consume quite a bit of time, we will not do our usual visits to different student centers with all the core programs highlighted. However do not be concerned – you will have a special day with your sponsored child. We cannot do a tour without including that wonderful day of relationship-building and memories!

Trust you will consider this unique tour, and after praying, quickly register while there are still seats available. You will be both blessed and amazed at these Leadership Development Students as all our classes join for the fun and fellowship with their graduating friends. Even if your student isn’t graduating this year you will enjoy your time together. It is so hard to imagine the humble beginnings they came from as we see accomplished young men and women. God is so good and your partnership is greatly valued.

*Advocate Discount* This trip is offered at a 20% discount for Compassion Advocates. Discount spaces are very limited, and are on a first-come first-serve basis.

Price: The cost of this tour is $3795.00 per person for double occupancy.

Included in our tour price are round-trip airfare between Washington DC Dulles Airport and Ethiopia, lodging, all meals, travel within Ethiopia, tips, your child's travel, guides and translators during the tour, admission fees, departure tax and administrative costs.

Costs not included in the tour price are transportation to and from Washington DC, passport and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.

Safety and Preparation:
This tour will be a little more difficult because of long international flights, time change, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads, and long days. We will have a light work element in this tour.

Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.

Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information tab before finalizing your decision.

Days 1 and 2: Traveling to Ethiopia
Monday and Tuesday, November 12-13: After meeting at the Dulles airport in Washington, DC, our Ethiopian Airlines noon flight takes off for Addis Ababa. With plenty of time to eat, sleep, get acquainted, and make those first journal entries we finally land Tuesday morning in Ethiopia. Orientation for the week and dinner fill part of our first day.

Day 3: Learning the Big Picture of Compassion in Ethiopia
Wednesday, November 14: How inspiring to start our time sharing praise songs and then devotions with our dedicated Ethiopian staff. After coffee and tea break they are so eager to give us an overview of each of the core Compassion programs and then tour their office. In addition to the financial side and the work with our church partners, you will be so impressed with their process for child letters that you’ll come home more motivated to write your child regularly.

Day 4: The Best Day of All
Thursday, November 15: Our sponsored children from all over Ethiopia have traveled in to Addis to share this exciting day with us. They can be kings and queens for a day but by the end we are the ones that are blessed. Time to play, get our questions answered, gain a better understanding of our child’s circumstances and community, and have so much fun. We’ll eat lunch in our little family units and then share our gifts we brought. After a group photo so we can remember our big Ethiopian family, we’ll pray with our children before sending them on their way home. Lasting memories are made but the photos only tell part of the story. We need to describe the emotions that went along with it.

Days 5 – 7: Exciting LDP Time in Awassa
Friday-Sunday, November 16-18: Taking only the luggage we need and storing the large ones in our Addis hotel, we board our bus for the beautiful ride to Awassa. Cameras ready and conversation flowing, we make our way through the rural area. Settling in our new hotel we quickly join the Leadership Development activities. How fun to see these young people so excited and thankful for the opportunities they’ve been given. As we share in their graduation ceremony, we are humbled at God’s goodness and so thankful that we can be a part. How hard they all worked to get this far in life and we know it’s only the beginning. Proud parents remind us of their humble backgrounds and we say “thank you, Lord, and praise to your name.” After joining our Ethiopian brothers and sisters in worship and sharing from God’s word, we travel back Sunday afternoon to our hotel in Addis Ababa.

Days 8 and 9: Taking it Home with a New Message
Monday and Tuesday, November 19-20: Of course we have a verbal message to share with friends and family but we also want to return with gifts and souvenirs. This will help us tell our story even better. After shopping and packing it’s time for the airport and our journey home. Our late night flight includes a refueling stop in Rome and then arrives back in the US early Tuesday so we have plenty of time for our connecting flights. Now that we saw the fruits of Compassion by spending time with our servant leaders in university, we know child development through sponsorship works. Our passion has been renewed and our commitment deepened. We truly have a new message and we’re ready to tell it!

In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs.  Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration.  If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return.  Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks.  The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.

RESERVATIONS should be made well in advance and require a nonrefundable deposit of $380.00 per person. Final Payment of $3415.00 is due no later than 7/23/2012.

Air transportation as included in the tour is based on economy-class transportation and is subject to all rules and regulations governing these fares. Fuel surcharges are added on a per-ticket basis at time of confirmation. In the event these surcharges are increasingly higher than budget estimates, we may require additional funds to cover these surcharges.

Airlines will frequently have flight changes that may interfere with your international connection from your domestic flight. Please understand that we are not responsible for any costs associated with airline changes as they are outside of our control. For this reason, we recommend allowing at least four hours between arrival time at the gateway city and the time the group flight departs the airport. We will communicate any pricing and itinerary changes immediately.
