Ethiopia is a land of contrasts and extremes, with remote and wild places. Some of the highest and most stunning places on the African continent are found here, such as the jagged Simien Mountains and the Danakil Depression, with its fumaroles and lunar-like landscape. Ethiopia remains the only country never colonized. Many people visit because of the remarkable manner in which ancient historical traditions have been preserved. The ceremonies and rituals of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church open a window into the world of the Old Testament. It is truly a place that transports you to another world and another time!

This trip will focus in Addis Ababa and the surrounding areas. The city of Addis is a hub for international diplomacy concerning Africa. The diversity of its people is reflected in the many churches, mosques and museums, including the Ethiopian National Museum.

Compassion has partnered with local churches in Ethiopia since 1993. Over the past 20 years that partnership has resulted in thousands of children sponsored through our Child Development Program. Come and see the work of the local church, the smiles of the children, the dedication of the staff and the immeasurable beauty of Ethiopia’s landscapes. On this tour you will also experience an entire day with your very own sponsored child and connect in person with the help of a translator. Sign up today for the trip of a lifetime!

Registration: Our trips fill up quickly on a first-come basis, so it is important to register as soon as possible. Once we have received your registration along with a deposit of $380.00, we will confirm your place on the tour and you may then purchase your domestic air ticket. The final payment of $3,595.00 is due no later than 2/27/15.

Please register now to complete the registration form online.

Price: The cost of this tour is $3,975 per person for double occupancy.

Included in our tour price are round-trip airfare between Washington D.C. and Ethiopia, lodging, all meals, travel within Ethiopia, tips, your child's travel, guides and translators during the tour, admission fees, departure tax and administrative costs.

Costs not included in the tour price are transportation to and from Washington D.C., passport and incidentals such as snacks, additional beverages, laundry, phone calls, film and other personal items. You may want to bring extra spending money for shopping at the local markets.

Safety and Preparation: This tour will be more difficult because of long international flights, time change, and impoverished conditions. Also, there will be some walking, rides on bumpy roads, and long days. We will have a light work element in this tour.

Compassion constantly monitors the safety of our destination countries and will make any adjustments necessary to protect our tour participants, sponsored children and in-country staff. We believe it is important to provide safe, comfortable accommodations, traditional meals and reliable transportation so that your focus can be on what God is teaching you and the impact of the experience rather than concern for your personal safety and well-being.

Please read the Tour Conditions and General Information tab before finalizing your decision.

Day 1: Beginning the Journey On Sunday June 7th our group arrives at the Washington D.C. (Dulles)
Airport to begin our journey to Ethiopia. We’ll find a spot at the airport to meet one another and have a brief orientation for the adventure ahead of us. At 10:15 AM we board Ethiopian Airlines Flight #510 on a direct 12-½ hour flight to Addis Ababa! We’re off!

Days 2-4: Compassion Programs First-Hand
For the next several days you will learn what it means to immerse yourself in a new culture and fully understand exactly what Child Development is all about. You’ll meet the children, see the impact of the Child Survival Program and meet countless, dedicated staff, pastors and volunteers

A fun venue to play and a personal translator will equip you with all you need to make memories for a lifetime!

Day 6: Engaging the Community
Today the children are excited for activities, crafts and interaction from you and the team. With supplies in hand and open hearts to serve, you will engage the children in all kinds of Bible school and craft activities as a group. You will also spend the afternoon experiencing a “Day in the Life” with families who live nearby. You will see first-hand what they accomplish and take on with each new day…and you’ll help them with their daily activities!

Days 7-9: Church Service & Cultural Excursions
The next couple days will encompass a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s culture. You will see God’s movement through the local Church during a worship service and experience Ethiopia from walking its markets, visiting a museum and meeting street side vendors. It is so important to understand where your sponsored child lives and the rich culture shaping them!

Day 10: Returning Home
On Wednesday, June 17th, the group departs from Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Flight #500 for a direct flight back to Washington D.C. We arrive at 8:30 AM on Thursday the 18th into the US. We continue on to meet our family and friends back home, forever changed by our experience.

In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs.  Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration.  If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return.  Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks.  The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.

RESERVATIONS should be made well in advance and require a nonrefundable deposit of $380 per person. The final payment of $3,595.00 is due no later than 2/27/15.

Air transportation as included in the tour is based on economy-class transportation and is subject to all rules and regulations governing these fares. Fuel surcharges are added on a per-ticket basis at time of confirmation. In the event these surcharges are increasingly higher than budget estimates, we may require additional funds to cover these surcharges.

Airlines will frequently have flight changes that may interfere with your international connection from your domestic flight. Please understand that we are not responsible for any costs associated with airline changes as they are outside of our control. For this reason, we recommend allowing at least four hours between arrival time at the gateway city and the time the group flight departs the airport.
