We can learn a lot from the prayers of a child. The thing I believe sets the prayers of children apart from the prayers of adults is their liberal use of “thank you.” While our prayers are often heavy on the petitions, children’s prayers are heavy on the gratitude. Children’s bedtime prayers usually come with a list of people they are thankful for: Mom, Dad, brother, sister, neighbor, teacher, friend. And on and on!

It’s not so different for children in poverty. In my travels with Compassion, the children I meet are overflowing with gratitude. God has truly ordained their lips with praise. These children thank God for each meal, for their houses, shoes and textbooks — things we often take for granted. And their bedtime list of family and friends is sprinkled with the names of their sponsors and the Compassion staff.

Thank you, once again, for your commitment to remember these children in your prayers. This month as you pray, remember to let those words of praise pass from your lips — just as they do from the lips of children. God delights in them!
