Children are loyal before they even understand what loyalty is. They are loyal to a toy, to a favorite movie, even to a particular T-shirt they refuse to take off. But in those scenarios, loyalty can blur into stubbornness far too easily!
What is truly amazing to see is the loyalty of a child when revealed through love and respect. As a parent, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing my own son’s loyalty and trust. His constant support and faithfulness are a gift. But they were also earned. My son learned at an early age that he could depend on me. He knew I loved him and would do all I could to protect him. Children learn loyalty when they see it demonstrated by those around them.
For children living in poverty, loyalty can be an abstract concept. When nobody pledges support to a child, they can struggle to know where to place their trust. Some trust no one — while others give their loyalty away too freely to anyone who can offer them the tiniest bit of support.
Through the churches Compassion partners with around the world, though, children’s lives are filled with adults and friends they can trust with their loyalty. This is especially true for children and their families in the Philippines as they deal with the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan. Join us in prayer for the thousands affected, and our staff as they work to provide safe places for children to feel loved and supported.
Thank you for your faithful support in the past year, in lifting up both the prayers and praises of children in poverty. Your loyalty to the children we serve together has truly been a blessing. May you have a wonderful holiday!
