December 2012 Prayer Calendar

Little girls love to dress up. You don’t have to be a parent to understand that! They love to wear sparkles and frilly dresses and love to dance. In short, little girls want to be beautiful.

But what I wish those little girls knew as they twirl in their dresses is that their beauty comes from the inside. It’s not the dress but their inner joy that makes them beautiful. That’s a hard concept to explain to a child, though. And it’s not just little girls. All children need to know that there is something in them, a divine spark, that makes them radiant.

I’ve worked at Compassion for more than 30 years, and in that time I have visited hundreds, if not thousands, of children who live in extreme poverty. Too many of these children have never been told that they’re beautiful. Too many have been told the opposite — that they are ugly and worthless.

But then I meet children who have learned the truth of who they really are. Parents have told them how loved they are. Compassion staff have told them how valuable they are. And sponsors have written to them and told them “You are beautiful.” And they are. Even without sparkle or glitter or frilly dresses. The clothes may be plain or even tattered, but the radiance, the inner beauty, shines brightly. I’ve never seen children more beautiful than the ones who were made new by Jesus Christ — beauty from ashes.

This month, will you pray for children, specifically young girls, who do not yet know that they are beautiful? Will you pray that someone in their lives will speak truth into them? Pray that they will be reminded of who they really are — a beautiful creation of the King.
