July 2012 Prayer Calendar

Participation in the Prayer Partner Network is an essential part of Compassion's ministry for children and families in poverty.

One of my favorite pictures of childhood is watching a child jump into the outstretched arms of an adult. Sometimes the leap is filled with fear, as when a little boy jumps into a pool for the first time. At other times the child may be propelled by sadness, just wanting to be held and comforted. But regardless of the circumstances, in that moment, the child is dependent on those adult arms and needs them to be both strong and gentle.

For so many children in poverty, there are no outstretched arms to jump into. Their parents work long hours to provide even the most basic needs — their arms are occupied with work. Often, childhood slips away for these children without them ever experiencing that sense of safety.

But for children who are ministered to by Compassion, outstretched arms are everywhere they look! Workers at the child development centers hug and play and offer a sense of security that many children have never felt before. Their parents, experiencing some relief from poverty, are able to stretch out their own arms and offer care and love. Sponsors get to offer long-distance arms! A sponsor’s prayers, love and encouragement are truly outstretched arms for a child to leap into. And most important of all, children know the all-encompassing arms of Jesus, and His incredible love and protection of His children.

This month, please pray with me that Compassion children will learn that they can depend on the people in their lives who are reaching out to them. That they will rediscover their childhood — while being held close and safe by people who love them.

There’s another set of arms I want to be sure to recognize — yours. As a faithful prayer partner, you provide another layer of safety and security for the children we serve. Thank you for reaching out to the Father with your prayers. They mean the world to more than a million children who are daily being released from poverty, in Jesus’ name.

Verse of the Month

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

  — John 15:5, NIV
