If you want to know the truth about something, I’ve learned it’s best to ask a child. They will give you their opinions about your clothes, your corny jokes or whatever is on the top of their minds — always honest, never sugar-coated. Often that honesty is heart-warming. Sometimes it’s humorous. And sometimes it may even be more than you bargained for!
But at some point, that honesty can be tainted. A child is mocked for his honesty. He is hurt because he told the truth about how he felt, about his fears or insecurities. Or perhaps that child learns to lie because he is lied to. I see this over and over with the children we serve through Compassion. Poverty is a deceiver. It tells children they don’t matter. That they’re worthless. That poverty is what they were born for. Those layers of dishonesty can weigh on a child. And soon he believes them.
That’s why I am so thankful that through Compassion we can bring truth! At the child development centers, children realize their special gifts, how talented they are, and how special God has made them. Each lie that poverty has whispered is shouted down with hope.
And in the letters children get from their sponsors, I see truth again. Children learn the truth that they are loved and valued. Sponsors speak Scripture to their children. And each bit of truth can be held in a child’s hands. Can be shared with his family. Can be pulled out from that special place and read, over and over, to drown out the lies of poverty.
Your prayers are another way to bring truth to these beautiful children. Will you pray this month that the truth is bright in each child’s life — brighter than the darkness that surrounds them? Pray that the truth of God’s Word will be embedded deep into each child’s heart. And pray also for their sponsors, parents and Compassion staff, that they will be given the specific words of encouragement and light that each child needs to hear.
Thank you, as always, for lifting up prayers of truth and hope for children living surrounded by lies and darkness. You are a blessing!
