As a parent, it can be hard to encourage a child to use his or her imagination. It seems there is little time for imagination when you’re rushing your child to get ready for school, or when at bedtime you find yourself pushed to the point of exhaustion.

But I fondly remember the times I did encourage my child to dream — when I played along as he pretended to be an astronaut or a fireman. What joy can be found in a child’s imagination! In that place of fantasy there is no sadness and no fear. A child who imagines that he can conquer anything or be anything is a child one step closer to realizing the dream.

My friend and co-worker Wess Stafford, with whom I have served for more than 30 years, knows this more than almost anyone I’ve met. As president and CEO of Compassion International, Wess takes the task of advocating for children very seriously. Recently Wess released his second book, Just a Minute. The book is filled with true stories of “divine moments” when a child’s life was changed forever. Each story reminds me that it takes only a minute for me to change a child’s life. Any minute in which I let a child’s imagination run wild is a minute for that child to “be” anything he can dream of, and to believe that he can ultimately fulfill God’s intentions for him.

That’s one of the things that pleases me most about the work of Compassion. Our staff around the world pour into the lives of children, filling them with moments of joy and hope. The children we serve get to set aside their adult-level burdens for just a minute and ... be children. Children who imagine and dream. Children who can conquer the world.

Thank you again for your prayers for these precious, imaginative children. Please continue to pray that their dreams will move from imagination to reality.

Verse of the Month
