In Tanzania, a child starts school at age 7. In theory, primary school is free here. While it's true that there are no tuition fees, there are numerous costs associated with those first years of school. School uniforms must be purchased; without a uniform, a child is sent home. Books need to be bought as well as other school supplies.

A Mother Who Never Gave Up Kajal had already failed her husband twice. Each time she gave birth to a daughter, her husband and her mother-in-law believed she had given birth to a burden. With each daughter came the need for a dowry, exorbitant amounts of money that they would never be able to afford. Their home was falling apart, leaving them cold and exposed in the winter. Another daughter was simply another expense.
