A mysterious virus has struck the Bihar state in eastern India. News reports indicate that at least 50 children have died from the virus.

Doctors have been unable to identify the illness, but the symptoms are similar to viral encephalitis. Encephalitis causes inflammation to the brain and can lead to seizures, paralysis and death. The virus can be transmitted by insect bites.

The Compassion partnership facilitators in eastern India are following up on this situation with the Compassion-assisted centers located in Bihar.

So far, no Compassion-assisted children have been affected.

Please pray for protection over the children and families in this area. Pray that the virus will be identified soon so that a treatment may be made available for those affected.

Compassion India will keep us updated as more information is available.

Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.
