UPDATE -- 11/12/2013

Compassion Philippines continues to assess the damage and gather information after the devastating Typhoon Haiyan occurred on November 8, 2013.

Communications and transportation continues to remain difficult, so the number of children and church partners affected by the storm has not been verified.

The province of Bohol is without electricity and may not receive it for another 45 days. This area was impacted by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in October.

Funds have begun to be disbursed to Compassion Philippines to provide relief assistance to church partners located in Leyte, Samar, Panay, Biliran, and Sorsogon. The relief assistance includes food provision, medicine and first aid kits, tents, blankets, basic clothing, and hygiene items.

The Compassion Philippines disaster team is monitoring the situation closely. Please remain patient as information is being collected during such a difficult time.

Please pray for the Lord’s protection and care for the Philippines. Please pray for all staff members who are involved in the difficult task of assessing damages throughout the affected communities. Please ask for the Lord’s comfort and strength to the families who have lost loved ones.

ADVISORY -- 11/11/2013

On Friday, November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines causing mass destruction. The Visayas region was the hardest hit area. The following provinces where Compassion projects are located have been impacted by the typhoon:

  • Masbate
  • Southern Sorsogon
  • Samar
  • Leyte
  • Cebu
  • Negros Occidental
  • Aklan
  • Antique
  • Iliolo
  • Guimaras
  • Bohol
  • Mindoro

Project Facilitators for these areas have reported that many families were able to seek shelter in safe areas and evacuation shelters.

At the moment, it is difficult to determine the exact number of Compassion children and church partners which may have been affected.

Currently, the Visayas area and the Oriental Mindoro continue to remain without electricity.

All of the local church partners have provided emergency food provisions for affected families. The local church partners are coordinating with local government agencies and organizations for preemptive evacuation and relief assistance.

Compassion Philippines has established a disaster team that is monitoring the situation closely. They will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Please pray for the Lord's protection and care for the Philippines. Please pray for all staff members who are involved in the difficult task of addressing throughout the affected communities. Please ask for the Lord's comfort and strength to the families who have lost loved ones.
