Since the beginning of July, Nicaragua has been experiencing an outbreak of dengue fever. The national health ministry has declared a health alert for the capital, Managua, and the departments of Chinandega, Chontales, León and Managua.

Currently, 62 children from Elegidos de Jesus Student Center (NI-257), Gedeones del Reino Student Center (NI-261) and Generacion de Guerreros Student Center (NI-262) in Chinandega have been affected. Some of these children have been hospitalized and are receiving treatment. The mother of one child has passed away from dengue fever. Currently, no children from El Buen Pastor Student Center (NI-263), Sendero de Fe Student Center (NI-264), and Centro de Desarrollo Integral Pan de Vida (NI-266) have been affected; however, these centers are located in the Chinandega department. The outbreak has also increased to the Masaya department as well as the southern coast of Nicaragua.

Compassion Nicaragua is using disaster relief funding to provide children from the affected centers with mosquito nets and repellent.

Please pray for the Lord’s comfort for the family who lost their mother. Please ask the Lord to provide healing for those who are sick and to protect those who have not contracted dengue fever.

Compassion Nicaragua will keep us updated as more information is available.
