Global Food Crisis Update

Thank you!

Thank you to all who have participated in our recent global food crisis campaigns. The response was absolutely phenomenal!

How Your Gift Is Making a Difference

Addressing Urgent Food Needs
Compassion serves as a Christian child development ministry to release children from all aspects of poverty -- spiritual, economic, social and physical. And because we operate with an established network of more than 4,500 church partners and child development centers worldwide, your contribution will be made immediately available to care for those with the greatest need.

The funds received in March will provide food for more than 60,000 registered children and their families in regions that have been most impacted by the global food crisis. For many Compassion-assisted children, the food received at their Compassion center may be their only meal for the day.

  • First recipients of the funds raised in March include children in Bolivia, Brazil, Guatemala, Peru and the Philippines.
  • Children are being weighed and measured to identify the most vulnerable and to monitor progress over time.
  • The range of food supplies provided includes food staples (rice, beans and cooking oil); meal complements of fruits, vegetables and meat; and vitamin-enhanced beverages.

Increasing Long-term Food Security
In addition to urgent food provision, Compassion has begun to address the long-term stability of food supplies for more than 100,000 registered children and family members in 12 countries.

In keeping with Compassion's approach to long-term holistic child development, these strategies seek to minimize the impact of future food challenges among the poorest of Compassion's beneficiaries.

Long-term strategies will include:

  • Church-based agriculture projects, enabling churches in some of the world's poorest regions to provide food for Compassion-assisted children and their families.
    • Includes traditional food crops like alfalfa, wheat, barley, peas and beans, tomatoes, spinach and other vegetables.
    • Worms will be raised for composting.
    • Guinea pigs and other small animals will be raised for food.
  • Training for current farmers in crop diversity, productivity and storage.
  • Vocational and microenterprise training for parents of children in urban areas.
  • Education for mothers and caregivers in...
    • food production
    • the nutritional needs of their children

Welcome to Compassion

If you're new to Compassion, welcome to the family. If you've given to Compassion in the past, you probably know that we focus on long-term child development rather than on relief -- the long-term, rather than just the short-term.

You know that we partner with local churches around the world to help children grow into responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. It's in our mission statement:

In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.
