Kakira Child Development Center

This church has 1,200 attendees and their vision is to make known the Gospel and equip followers of Christ to transform their community. As a part of this vision they host 270 children at their Compassion center where they read and study the Bible and have the love and hope of Jesus shown to them through the center staff and volunteers.

270 children

Pastor John Bati Andama is changing Kakira as he serves the children in Jesus’ name. This church oversees a Compassion child development program and is looking to partner with a church in the U.S.

  • Compassion-sponsored children receive regular health screenings, medical care when needed, personal hygiene training, and academic support.
  • Other activities offered at this center: storytelling, poetry, singing and worship, games, sports.
  • Parents of these children also benefit from parent meetings, positive parenting seminars, Bible studies, and participation in income generating activities.

I'd like to learn more about UG-832:

  • Located near a sugar factory and 2.5 miles from the Nile River, Kakira is home to 60,000 people.
  • Some adults are employed as farmers, but most are unemployed. The average monthly income per family is the equivalent of $9.
  • Health issues: Malaria, HIV/AIDS, skin diseases.
  • Social concerns: child neglect/abuse, illiteracy, poor sanitation, lack of vocational training and a market to sell produce.
  • St. Peters Church of Uganda was started by workers of Kakira Sugar Works who were brought from different districts of Uganda and countries bordering Uganda.
  • One of their main goals was to have a place to worship together, to bring new believers to, and to cultivate spiritual growth.
  • They have partnered with Compassion since September of 2008.
  • The community is becoming more open to hearing the Gospel through the service of these programs.
  • Material benefits such as bedding and mosquito nets are made available.
  • Children are shown the love of Jesus through the center staff and their confidence and social skills are given the opportunity to flourish.
*Consider using this profile as a tool to begin a discussion with your leadership to see how it may fit with your church's vision and mission. While we cannot guarantee you will be partnered specifically with this Pastor, we are seeking participants for our Church to Church strategy.
