The leadership team at Brevard Community Church faced some challenging decisions. They had outgrown their facility and needed additional space to serve as ambassadors for Christ in their community. But the leadership also wanted to address the needs of the world’s poor.
“We want to be a church that’s outwardly focused – to recognize those suffering and without Christ around the world,” Pastor Alewine said.
The congregation rallied, submitting pledges that completely covered the cost of a new building addition. “Our church leadership decided to tithe on our congregation’s pledges. We gave ten percent to meet needs outside our church’s walls. Part of that funding was designated to sponsor a college student in Compassion’s Leadership Development Program.”
Brevard Community Church chose to sponsor Jewel Confidente Luis, a young college student enrolled in Compassion’s Leadership Development Program in the Dominican Republic.
“We intentionally chose Jewel because our children’s ministry sponsors two children from the Dominican Republic through Compassion,” said Pastor Alewine. “We want our kids to catch the vision that these two children can grow up to be just like Jewel – Godly leaders in their families and communities, equipped as servant-leaders.”
Not only is the children’s ministry intrigued by Jewel, Brevard Community Church’s entire youth ministry program is, too. During a short missions trip to the Dominican Replublic, the junior and senior high students met Jewel and were inspired by his vision to be used by the Lord. Jewel has become a Godly role model to the students in Brevard.
Pastor Alewine’s church has appointed someone within their congregation to write to Jewel regularly so their church family can be involved with his life, pray for him, serve as a source of guidance and affirm his dreams.
In God’s perfect economy, He is using the U.S. church to raise up indigenous leaders like Jewel through the Leadership Development Program. He is also using students like Jewel to shape young leaders within U.S. churches.
