How is Compassion fighting the AIDS epidemic and saving lives?
Every 14 seconds, a child is orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. The AIDS epidemic is shattering the lives of children throughout sub-Saharan Africa. More than 11 million African children have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
The AIDS epidemic is particularly devastating to poor children. Several factors multiply the destruction caused by the AIDS epidemic in developing countries:
- lack of education
- prevalence of environmental diseases
- high cost of treatment
- other factors of poverty (poor health facilities, communication and transportation difficulties, and unstable governments)
The AIDS epidemic is a global issue that often seems too overwhelming to understand and even more impossible to fight against. But Compassion's AIDS Initiative offers comprehensive and holistic services that allow us to proactively fight the AIDS epidemic one child at a time. This vital children's ministry provides:
- shelter, food and counseling for AIDS orphans and treatment for those who are HIV-positive and now have AIDS
- HIV testing for children living in poverty
- AIDS education and awareness for poor children and their families
