Seeds of Change
by an anonymous sponsor

As spring slowly arrives in the frigid north, I have been contemplating the power God placed in the heart of the lowly seed. God made seeds that can grow on barren rock, crumbling it with tender roots, creating soil as the tree grows. I saw a picture of a tree high on a ledge, 10 feet above the nearest water source. It had grown roots long enough to reach the distant water from its high, barren ledge. Seeds are such amazing things.

So as I sort through my stash of seed packets for garden herbs, I look though my folders of letters from my Compassion children. I have seen none of them except in pictures, but they are my seeds, too. I know the harsh environments in which they grow. My parents were missionaries, and I have seen thousands like them.

I know the political strife and corrupt officials interested only in self-aggrandizement. I know their spiritual darkness and fear. I remind them of God's love for them and that disaster, rather than being proof his abandonment, is further proof of his love and his promise to never leave or forsake us. Still it seems an impossible, uphill climb sometimes, with so little possibility of changing the world.

That's the difficulty with growing seeds. The most important growth takes place where no one but God can see. It takes great faith in the promise, "One sows, another waters, but it's God who gives the increase." Or rather, it takes the faith of a mustard seed. So I keep planting because who knows what impossible things might some day come to be because of the power of a seed.
