Why is there violence in Kenya? On Dec. 27, 2007, Kenya held national elections to choose a new government. After the results were announced by the Electoral Commission of Kenya, there were alleged claims of rigging the presidential elections which lead to rioting, violence, killings, rampaging and looting. Kenya is a country divided on ethnic preferences and the 2007 elections were probably the most contested elections.
Several areas in Kenya are in a deep humanitarian crisis. According to media reports, and estimated 500 protesters have been killed, more than 1,000 have been arrested and charged with various offenses, more than 250,000 people have been displaced from their destroyed homes, and thousands have been injured. Many are currently camping in police stations and refugee camps in the country. Those who sought refuge in churches are living in constant fear of attack.
