Distributing Hope to the Children Affected by Hurricane Katrina

Dr. Wess Stafford, President of Compassion International, recorded two 30-second public service announcements explaining Compassion's role in The Survivors booklet distribution.

Compassion International, in cooperation with International Bible Society (IBS), is distributing 180,000 copies of The Survivors to children affected by hurricane Katrina. The Survivors is an interactive scripture booklet specifically designed to help children deal with crisis and loss.

Developed by IBS, The Survivors offers a message of eternal hope. It is being distributed in both English and Spanish to churches and other ministries working with those who survived the hurricane. Helping children work through what they have seen and experienced as a result of this crisis can play an important role in their healing process.

"Our hearts are broken for all of the people affected by Hurricane Katrina," said Dr. Wess Stafford, President of Compassion International. "In cases of disaster, children suffer the most. They do not have a voice in the midst of the devastation and destruction. It is important to help children process their feelings, thoughts and fears through the filter of the Bible as they recover from this traumatic experience. This booklet is a great resource for the Church and other ministries who are working with children."

For IBS, cooperating with Compassion International will aid efforts to "get the Word of God into more hands quickly," said Peter Bradley, President of International Bible Society. "I am confident these scripture booklets will be given to many children who need them. This is our nation's worst disaster ever; many people are stretched to their limits. God's Word can bring them peace, comfort and strength."

Compassion International is one of the nation's largest Christian child development organizations, working with more than 65 denominations and many indigenous church partners in Africa, Asia, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Since 1952, Compassion has touched the lives of more than a million children. For information about sponsoring a child, contact Compassion via its web site at www.compassion.com or by calling (800) 336-7676, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT.
