Advisory: Flooding in Uganda

UPDATE: October 1, 2007 - The flooding in Uganda has subsided somewhat. Compassion Uganda is issuing relief supplies to the people affected and reviewing proposals for additional intervention to help with post-flooding problems, such as potential outbreaks of malaria and other diseases because of the stagnant water.

September 27, 2007 - Torrential rains have recently flooded parts of eastern and northeastern Uganda. Six Compassion-assisted child development centers are severely affected. The homes of 155 Compassion children have been destroyed, and 172 families have suffered major property loss with over 90 percent of their food stores decimated. Clean water sources are now mixing with the floodwaters.

"The church has organized a day of prayer for the affected families and for God's intervention and provision," says UG-818 Project Director Freda Zema. And the president of Uganda is visiting the devastated areas throughout this week.

The flooding has created significant issues relating to children's programs as caregivers fear the rushing waters, and it has created transportation and communication problems for Compassion staff. The Ugandan parliament has declared the flooded districts to be disaster areas.

The affected Compassion projects are:

  • Mawanga Child Development Center (UG-302)
  • Kalerwe Child Development Center (UG-422)
  • Kirika Child Development Center (UG-516)
  • Makuyu Child Development Center (UG-815)
  • Mutufu Child Development Center (UG-816)
  • Sironko Child Development Center (UG-818)

Please pray for the safety and provision of Compassion staff, families and children in Uganda.

Compassion Uganda will provide updates as information becomes available.

Compassion International will notify you if your sponsored child has been affected.
