Almost one month after an earthquake rattled Peru, the emotional toll on Compassion-assisted children continues. Volunteer psychologists have been sent to the projects surrounding Ica, Pisco and Chincha to address the many occurrences of post-traumatic stress disorder being diagnosed. Meals are being prepared and served in church child developments centers so that the debris and rubble that serve as reminders of the massive devastation can be removed.
Children are being encouraged by center staff to take part in therapeutic art to help communicate their fears and anxiety through drawing. Some children were so affected by the earthquake that they no longer speak. Compassion has enlisted the help of speech therapists to address these children's needs. Pastors are now receiving support from local psychologists and counselors to deal with the stress of caring for the many affected families and children.
Nine damaged church projects will resume activities this week and reconstruction efforts are under way to repair damaged church buildings. Although public school classes have not resumed due to safety concerns, center staff will be providing reinforcement classes so that children will be up to date with their coursework when school starts.
Please continue to pray for Compassion Peru staff, families, children and pastors during this difficult time.
Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
