Advisory: Flooding in Honduras

UPDATE: Oct. 31, 2008 - The heavy rains in Honduras have finally stopped, but the weather remains cold and windy.

More than 270,000 people were relocated due to the flooding.

Compassion's church partners are providing shelter to children and their families, as well as distributing bedding and food supplies.

Please continue to pray for the children and their families affected by the flooding. Also, please pray for the staff as they work to assist those families who have lost homes or possessions.

Compassion Honduras will keep us updated as more information is available.

Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.

UPDATE: Oct. 24, 2008 - More rain is predicted to hit Honduras over the next few days, adding to the extensive flooding that has already occurred throughout the country.

Almost 200,000 people have been relocated to temporary shelters.

Some Compassion-assisted child development centers have been affected by the flooding.

Compassion is currently providing groceries, mattresses, clothes and other supplies to families who have been affected.

Oct. 23, 2008 -Over the past several days, constant rains have led to severe flooding in Honduras. Water levels have reached as much as 23 feet in some places.

More than 24 thousand families are affected, and thousands have been evacuated.

Affected areas include regions near the Ulua and Choluteca Rivers, as well as:

  • Comayagua
  • Danli
  • Copan
  • Santa Barbara
  • Valle de Angeles

The following Compassion-assisted child development centers have been affected:

  • HO-217
  • HO-256
  • HO-307
  • HO-312
  • HO-324
  • HO-327
  • HO-329

Many children from these centers have been evacuated to temporary shelters until the flooding stops.
