Update: Earthquake in Peru

Multiple Compassion-assisted projects and children have been affected by the August 15 earthquake, which destroyed roads and infrastructure and continues to hinder rescue efforts. Looting is rampant and police response is slow due to the limited number of law enforcement officers available in the stricken areas.

As previously reported, nine Compassion-assisted projects were affected by the earthquake. Compassion Peru now reports that Casa de Dios Puerta del Cielo Student Center (PE-413) was also affected.

Additionally, there has been extensive flooding at many homes located near El Callao because of its proximity to the ocean. Children are afraid to leave their homes and many families are being forced to sleep outside. There is no electricity and looting is commonplace. The following projects are affected by the flooding:

  • Jireh Student Center (PE 121)
  • Jesus te llama Student Center (PE-441)

Compassion Peru staff are working around the clock to help receive and distribute needed supplies as well as evaluate the full impact of the disaster on Compassion-assisted children and families. The trucks carrying supplies, clothing, blankets, medicine and food are being protected by local law enforcement to ensure they arrive at their intended destinations.

Please continue to pray for Compassion Peru staff as they do God's work in sustaining the people of that region. We give thanks to them for their dedication and love.

Compassion Peru will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and will contact you if your sponsored child has been directly affected.
